The Computing Conundrum: Laptops, Desktops or Tablets?

download (8)

In today’s digital age, computing and IT are fundamental to the success of any business, even if yours is only small. If your computers need updating and you’re looking to buy new ones, developments in technology now mean that tablets are added to the laptop/desktop debate, making your decision on which to go for even more difficult. So, what are the pros and cons of each?

Desktops

Pros

If you have a diverse workforce in terms of age, then desktop computers from somewhere like SCC Trade have the added advantage of larger screens, making it easier for those with restricted eyesight to work at a computer for hours at a time. Although there’s not much in it, desktops generally have higher specifications than laptops. Desktops usually have more RAM, meaning you can load more programmes at once without your machine slowing down. You can also store a huge amount of files on a desktop computer, so if that’s important for your business, then a desktop is the one to go for.

Cons

Obviously desktops are restrictive, and you’ll have to work at a desk if you install them in your office. For most businesses, this isn’t too much of a problem, and you could just invest in a single laptop if you needed a portable work station on the odd occasion.

Laptops

Pros

Portability is obviously a laptop’s greatest advantage. By providing your employees with a laptop each, they can easily work at home should they suffer an injury or even if there’s a bad snow day, for example. You also have the freedom of bringing laptops into meetings for note-taking and presentations, as well as to meetings with clients.

Cons

Other than the lower RAM and memory capacity, giving each employee their own laptop could be risky. If they take it home and it gets broken by young children or stolen from an unsecure house, you could be the one left picking up the pieces.

Tablets

Pros

Tablets take portability to another level, and your employees are likely to enjoy the novelty. Tablets are generally cheaper than laptops or desktops, so you could save money by upgrading to this new technology.

Cons

Your existing IT systems may not lend themselves to tablet integration, so making the switch could be more hassle than it’s worth. Like with laptops, there’s also the risk of damage or theft, but tablets can work well as a complementary device to your existing computing system.
